Tree by the Stream

□ Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.

□ Alice Springs is small by town size and population, and yet there are about five Catholic missionary religious orders stationed in the town to serve the local citizens and the Indigenous in Central Australia. One of these five is the Missionaries of Charity, MC of Mother Teresa. On occasion the owner of the spiritual pub in town is in turn assigned to celebrate the Eucharist for the Sisters on Thursdays in their convent.

Once during the Eucharist in Advent 2010, in his short sermon the owner reminded the Sisters to prepare themselves for the coming of the Lord. After the mass, the leader of the Sisters asked if the owner would help them for a day of recollection the following Thursday. The owner at once accepted the invitation.

Next Thursday came. As promised, at 9am the Sisters' van stopped in front of the Presbytery. Being ready, the owner carried with him the Mass kit, quickly boarding the van for Trephina Gorge. The leader of the MC sisters then drove the van all the way to Trephina Gorge, an hour away from Alice Springs. Trephina Gorge has a creek with plenty of water. After the mass in an open space and the talk about Advent came the lunch, followed by the strolls with the Sisters along and in the creek. It was summer; the temperature reached 40°C! The owner took off his shoes, walking in the cold water with bare foot. To a corner of the creek, the owner encountered the "Tree By the Stream." And the owner raised his camera...

Cây Bên Suối

□ Phúc thay người không nghe theo lời ác nhân..
Nhưng vui thỏa với lề luật Chúa,
Lề luật của Ngài họ suy niệm đêm ngày.

□ Alice Springs, thị trấn sa mạc nhỏ bé về kích thước và dân số, nhưng lại có tới năm dòng tu truyền giáo phục vụ người bản xứ và người thổ dân. Một trong những nhà dòng chuyên phục vụ người thổ dân là Nữ Tử Bác Ái của Mẹ Têrêsa (Missionary of Charity). Thỉnh thoảng tác giả tới phiên, vào ngày thứ Năm ghé vào nhà dòng dâng thánh lễ cho riêng các sơ.

Hôm đó, mùa vọng 2010, tác giả nhắc nhở trong bài giảng về chuẩn bị tâm hồn chào mừng ngày Chúa đến. Sau thánh lễ, các sơ đề nghị tác giả thứ Năm tuần tới, giúp các sơ một ngày cấm phòng mùa Vọng. Tác giả nhận lời ngay.

Thứ Năm tuần sau, đúng hẹn, 9 giờ sáng xe các sơ dừng lại trước cửa nhà xứ. Tác giả đã sẵn sàng, chạy ra ngay, leo lên xe ngồi. Sơ bề trên lái xe thẳng tới Trephina Gorge, cách Alice Springs khoảng một tiếng lái xe. Trephina Gorge có suối chảy loanh quanh, nước khá nhiều. Sau thánh lễ ngoài trời, bài giảng, là ăn trưa, rồi các sơ dẫn tác giả đi suối. Trời mùa hè, nóng 40 độ. Tác giả cởi giầy, chân trần đi dọc theo suối nước. Chân mát lạnh bởi dòng nước mát… Tới ngay một khúc quanh, tác giả nhìn thấy Cây Bên Suối. Tác giả đưa máy lên…
